Lessons From Football

I said hike

The quarterback’s position is definitely one of the most difficult on any football team.  The quarterback has a crucial responsibility; taking the football from the center and then deciding whether to throw or pass.  This decision can be somewhat overwhelming for most 6-7 year olds, so it is always best to instruct them on the play ahead of time.

There is also another key responsibility for every quarterback – they start the play into motion by exclaiming the word:  “HIKE”!  Now, most young players love getting their hands on the ball.  Most young players also enjoy yelling on the football field; however, these two do not always occur simultaneously when the game clock is ticking.

One of my young players called for the football with an exclamation barely above a whisper as he said quietly “hike“.  Of course, no one heard a word the quarterback said and the ball remained on the field.  When we instructed the young man to start the play in motion – he plainly told us that he had “already said hike”!

Again, I could not help but draw the parallel to many Christians today.  They believe they are doing everything required of them, but are not really making enough noise for anyone to hear them.  As they justify in their minds that they are performing all of their necessary responsibilities; the game ball sits on the ground motionless.  No forward progress.  No ground gained.  I believe this lesson from football teaches us all something very important:  if we want God to use us to accomplish His game plan, we have to be willing to make some noise that will inspire and instruct our teammates!
