Belief

1: a state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing.

In order to survive and maneuver our present world, information is key.  Because of this, many of us find ourselves climbing the boundless escalator entitled:  the pursuit of knowledge.  We pay consultants and institutions astronomical amounts of money to share cutting edge techniques and teach us ”best practices” for our respective fields.

How much of this concept ebbs into our understanding of living out a real relationship with the God of the universe?  How many of us have confused being conformed to the image of Christ with just subscribing to the latest industry standards?  It is more than just “knowing” the right things.  It is about believing them.

Do you believe the things you know to be true?  How often do we seek fulfillment and satisfaction in things other than Christ, knowing ahead of time that they will leave us empty and broken?  Sin, even from the beginning, enters into our lives when we choose to believe a lie (something we know is not true).  For many of us, failure comes – not because of a lack of knowledge - but a lack of belief in what we know to be true.

One Response to “Belief”

Rich, you are so right… information IS key! The problem I have struggled with is that inner filter that is supposed to help me make my choices in what I DO believe. Today, we get information overload… never has there been so much INFORMATION available to even the most commonplace activity. Just starting with the TV (I know I will be dating myself), but as a child, we had THREE channels on the TV set. Today, I can’t even tell you how many we have! We used to play songs on turntables… today we store 1000s of songs on MP3 players that fit in a pocket. Not to even mention the personal computer and the word Google. There is no generation that has less excuse for NOT KNOWING the truth. The problem is… do we take time to filter THROUGH the information we know… testing it, trying it, making the choice of what to believe. Truth has NOT changed! God has not changed! We need to take time to latch onto the mind of Christ (I Cor 2:16, Phil 2:5) through the Word of God and filter everything we say and do through that Truth. (John 14:5)
